A Day with 23 kids

Today we spent the morning and afternoon with two other families here at our house. There were 23 kids in all- (not including Daniel who was working with Dad) 11 boys and 12 girls.
The younger kids loved seeing the pigs, chickens, and broiler chicks-they checked for eggs about every half hour!:) Us older ones played volleyball; more like "boomerang ball" since we couldn't get a very good volley going for the life of us. After we tired of that there was a small game of kickball until one of the younger girls accidentally got a ball in the face that had been kicked by an older boy!
Then it was lunchtime. How much food does it take to feed 23 kids and 3 moms? Well... four bags of chips, a heaping serving bowl of grapes, four gallons of lemonade, one gallon of tea, a broiling pan of brownies, and around 30 sandwiches of different varieties: egg-salad, ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and tuna. And the best part was, most of them were on white bread, which is a forbidden delicacy most of the time. Then after lunch some of the boys tramped through the woods to the fort Daniel built back there and on coming back, a couple of them, one in particular, were covered in chiggers!(Our mom made sure to advise them not to sit on any logs in there and still they managed to get infested!)
We girls got to hold the sweetest babies! It made us really want another one in our family- we'll see what God has in store! After one of the families left for soccer practice, we spent another hour or so chatting. One of the little girls asked Rachel to take her to see the pigs, and then we had a discussion about how pigs "talk". It was really funny! By the time they had to leave, all the kids were getting hungry again, so they finished off the brownies and chips. After the family left, we discovered that they had left behind a couple of items- a common occurence in large families! I guess it's just collaterol for the next visit! :)
